Introductory

In presenting the eleventh consecutive volume of the Bay City directory to its
patrons and the general public, the publishers desire to say that their aim has been
to produce a work that shall fairly and fully represent the manufacturing, mercantile
and other business interests of this, one of the leading cities of the Commonwealth of
                        Michigan.

All the work upon this edition, save the binding, has been done by Bay Cityans,
and the handsome appearance of the book is evidence that Bay City is not
behind any municipality in Michigan in the art of bookmaking.  The general use
of the volume during the next directory year will, it is hoped, establish its claim to
                        accuracy and completeness.

Upon its 452 closely printed pages - a gain of 12 pages over the edition of 1889 -
will be found the names of all male residents over 18 years of age.  In this edition
we have largely omitted including the names of ladies without occupation residing
with their parents, as well as the names of boys under 18 years employed as clerks
or engaged in the various mill and other manufacturing establishments.  Previous
years such names have been included in the directory.

The classified directory shows that Bay City is behind no Michigan city of its
size in the number and variety of its manufacturing and mercantile industries.

For the reason that the census enumerators have so recently reported the
population of the city, we will merely state that this volume contains 11,581
names, and, as has been stated these include the names of but few under the
age of 18 years.  The custom heretofore followed by all directory publishers
in the west, that of allowing each directory name to represent three persons,
would give Bay City at this time a population of 34,743.

We heartily return thanks to the public spirited citizens who by their business
favors have helped to sustain the annual publication of the Bay City Directory.
