Report of the Pioneer Society of the State of Michigan 1904 Lansing, Michigan W. S. George & Co., State Printers & Binders Page 724 BAY COUNTY |
During the year 1903 no death occurred in Bay county that attracted more attention or caused more general regret than that of Henry A. Gustin, which occurred in the month of September. Mr. Gustin had resided in Bay City since 1864. Born and reared in Canada, he, like so many natives of that country, became an exemplary American citizen. His first place of business in Bay City was in the Wolverton House, where he opened a grocery. Four or five years afterwards he was located in the Griswold block. Afterwards he took a responsible position in connection with the extensive Ballou lumbering plant located at Kawkawlin, where he remained for three years. Returning to Bay City, he was appointed deputy city treasurer in 1887, continuing in this office for twelve years. He was elected treasurer, from which office he retired April, 1893, with the good will and good opinion of everybody. Born January 3, 1824, his earthly life came to its close in September, 1903. Mr. Gustin was married in 1846, at Hamilton, Ont., to Eliza Keayes, who survives him. Their children are Charles C., Herbert H., Wilbert H., all residents of Bay City; Frederick K., of Chicago; Mrs. D. J. Thayer and Mrs. Stewart Church. Few men have lived so long and been so well known in one locality and left so few enemies and so many friends. |
